Case Study: Amoskeag Health
From stuck tickets to clearer decisions: Amoskeag Health’s path to more confident healthcare IT
For Amoskeag Health, technology is now part of how care happens. Phones, patient portals, records access, secure information sharing, and internal workflows all depend on IT working smoothly. As the organization grew more dependent on electronic systems, its leaders saw that basic support was no longer enough. They needed responsive help, stronger security confidence, and access to a deeper bench of expertise than a small internal team could provide on its own.
The Challenge
Amoskeag Health had an internal IT team of four people. They were familiar to staff and trusted as known points of contact, which made outsourcing a difficult decision. But the team was struggling to keep up with tickets, technology demands, and the range of expertise the organization needed. As Amoskeag Health’s President & CEO, Kris McCracken described it,
“Stuff was just getting stuck in pipelines, and staff were getting frustrated.”
At the same time, the stakes had changed. Healthcare had moved from paper-heavy operations to electronic systems. Patient communication, patient portal access, records requests, and security all depended on IT reliability. For an organization handling sensitive patient information, the concern was not abstract. As Kris put it,
“So much of what we do involves really sensitive information. It’s a bad idea to not really be well-protected.”
Why Mainstay
The decision to outsource came with natural concerns about control, continuity, and whether an outside partner would understand the organization’s needs. What stood out over time was Mainstay’s combination of responsiveness, specialist depth, and human support. Amoskeag Health’s team has described Mainstay’s team as quick to respond, easy to stay in touch with, and easy to bring into a conversation when the organization needed help thinking through a problem. Mainstay also gave Amoskeag Health access to specialists and subspecialists across different areas of technology. That depth mattered because the organization no longer had to expect a small internal team to cover every issue alone. Kris summarized the difference clearly:
“Four people cannot bring that level of expertise and knowledge.”
What Changed
After engaging Mainstay, Amoskeag Health saw a different kind of support experience. Instead of leaving leaders to interpret technical options on their own, Mainstay helped frame decisions in plain language. The team brought forward guideposts, key decision points, pros and cons, cost differences, security impacts, functionality impacts, and short- and long-term considerations. That helped non-technical leaders participate in technology decisions with much more confidence.
Mainstay also supported internal learning. The client described an internal team member becoming a SharePoint expert while still knowing she could call Mainstay when something was not working or when she needed the system to do something more.
A Tangible Difference
For Amoskeag Health, the value of Mainstay was not limited to ticket resolution. It included access to broader expertise, clearer guidance, responsive communication, and a support team that staff found approachable. Their leadership team also highlighted the comfort that comes from knowing the right specialist can be brought in for the right issue, whether the topic is security, a new feature, HIPAA expectations, funder expectations, or AI planning.
That depth changed the outsourcing decision from a loss of control into a source of confidence.
The Takeaway
Healthcare organizations do not need IT partners who make technology feel more complicated. They need guidance that makes decisions clearer, systems more reliable, staff better supported, and security easier to understand.
For Amoskeag Health, Mainstay helped turn a difficult decision into a more confident operating model.
